Foods to Avoid

At Moore Orthodontics, we provide patients of all ages with high quality, personalized orthodontic care in our two Philadelphia-area office locations in Mt. Airy and Bala Cynwyd. When you are improving your smile with braces, we want you to experience trouble-free, comfortable treatment.

When we place braces on your teeth, we will speak with you about the importance of avoiding certain types of foods and snacks which can damage or break your braces or put you at risk for tooth decay. In most cases, common sense will tell you what foods to steer clear of. Below are some of the foods to avoid that can harm your braces or put you at higher risk for developing tooth decay and other common dental problems which could extend the time you spend wearing braces due to needing dental treatment.

Sticky and Gooey Foods to Avoid

  • Chewing gum (both regular and sugar-free)
  • Licorice
  • Taffy
  • Caramels
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Starburst
  • Candy bars containing marshmallow, caramel, etc.

Hard Foods to Avoid

  • All types of nuts
  • Ice
  • Hard crusted breads including bagels and pizza crust
  • Chips of all types
  • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Corn on the cob
  • Hard taco shells

Limit Your Consumption of Sugary Foods such as:

  • Candy
  • Cake
  • Cookies
  • Pie
  • Ice cream

Consume Just Once Per Day

  • Soda
  • Sweetened tea
  • Energy drinks
  • Kool-Aid
  • Fruit juices

In addition to avoiding these foods, be sure not to chew on your nails, pencils or pens. And never use your teeth as tools to open packages, etc., to keep your braces safe. We encourage all our patients wearing braces to routinely check their appliances for loose brackets and wires. If you find a part of your braces that have loosened, give us a call right away for a repair appointment.
